Miele Triflex HX1 The Innovations Or A High Price Tag?

There are some really cool innovations and surprising specs with the Miele Triflex HX1.

The basics

The Miele Triflex HX1 is a premium cordless vacuum that comes in a variety of price points. There is a regular HX1 which comes in a couple of different colors for the same price; the HX1 Cat&Dog has LED lights on the floor head; the Triflex HX1 Pro has an LED floor head as well as one extra battery.

It gets the name Triflex because of three different ways:

  1. Handheld mode
  2. Standard configuration
  3. Connecting the main base directly to the cleaner head

It can be configured you can use it in handheld mode for above-floor cleaning; you can use it in the standard configuration which most cordless vacuums use with the handle connected to the stick which is connected to the floor head; you can use it in by far your favorite way which is by connecting the main base directly to the cleaner head and then connecting the stick to the handle.

Using

Regular stick vacuums put too much weight on your forearm and the Triflex puts a minimal amount of weight on your arm in this configuration.

It also means that it can stand up on its own for storage or breaks. It performs better as well as there's more weight pushing down on the brush head and there's less of a distance for the air to travel.

A slight increase in power in this configuration compared to the standard stick configuration was noticed. It wasn't much but it was there it's a pretty big innovation.

The test and review

Pros

  • handheld
  • filtration
  • power
  • battery
  • docking station

It handled its swivel was nice and smooth. The grip on the handle felt noticeably good.

It has excellent filtration which is seen on many of Miele's other vacuums. And it did pass the particle filtration test with no increase in the 2.3-micron particles from the baseline which is good.

It had really good power which measures in a variety of ways. For instance, the airflow was well above average in a high power setting.

High, CFM 47 44 49 58
Low, CFM 35 26 23 26

It is especially good in its low power setting too where I measured it at 35 CFM at the head which is more powerful than the Dyson's in their low power setting.

Interestingly, in the traditional sealed suction test at the base, it was below average. It was again right up there with the Dyson's on high power and better than the Dyson's on low power.

High, kPa 49 55 53 50
Low, kPa 28 22 21 16

It did better than average with the crevice pickup test because of that good seal. And that good suction also did well with deep cleaning carpets scoring a 98% on high power and a 92% on low power which is both great numbers though kind of expected for a vacuum in this price range.

Its cleaner head was a lower profile with multiple smaller gates. And its brush was able to be removed for easy cleaning which is a nice touch. That power translated to a great pickup on hard floors and carpet.

Battery numbers

One big pro is the battery. The battery is 2,500 mAh and is removable which means buying another one will double up the cleaning time. Replacing is easy as well. On low power and in handheld mode the vacuum lasts up to 60 minutes. On low power with the head attached the vacuum can do up to 30 minutes which is significant considering how much power the Miele has on the lowest settings. On high power, you can get 17 minutes with the head attached which is more than most high-end cleaners have.

Docking station

The docking station can be mounted on the wall and store the included three tools. The Miele makes 70 and 71 dB of noise on hard floors and carpet respectively.

Also, its tool set: a dusting brush, a crevice tool, and an upholstery tool were just above average.

Cons

  • Cleaner head
  • Standard roller
  • Dustbin
  • Price

The cleaning head is really good with fine debris but anything larger than that becomes an issue for it. Because of having a really low-profile, it just pushes bigger debris on both hard floor and carpet. Other vacuums include a soft roller for such purposes or like the Dyson's head that had adjustable gates. Not a big deal if you do not need to cope with larger debris but keep that in mind.

The standard roller is not very good with hair wrap. Most premium vacuums already have anti-wrap solutions so the Miele is not good if you have long hair or pets.

Its dustbin is unnecessarily complicated there were like four steps to empty the bin. And it was a little clunky to take on and off.

Finally, the standard nitpick is the price. For the price tag, you probably would love to see more.

Conclusion

That being said it's a terrific cordless vacuum with top of the line performance specs and features as well. As big-time innovations that should make a big impact on the industry and hope it does well.
