Dyson Ball Animal 2, Multifloor 2, Cinetic Big Ball, Ball Origin: The Differences Explained

Updated: Mar 28, 2024

Dyson makes one of the best vacuum cleaners on the market. You will not go wrong with any of these but they all are built for different needs. Ratings on Amazon are about the same. Bad reviews are based on users' experience of using these on a long shag carpet. Because of strong suction power, a cleaner gets bogged down on shaggy carpets. If you have a shaggy carpet, we would not recommend getting one of these Dyson cleaners.

The Dyson Ball Animal 2 has the most suction and is made for big sturdy jobs. If you know that you are going to clean big messes, you should probably go with the Dyson Ball Animal 2. The Animal version offers more attachments but the main thing is its whole machine HEPA filtration.

The Dyson Ball Multifloor 2 does not have sealed filtration but it does have a HEPA filter

Those machines that have a whole filtration system keep the dust inside the cleaner without tiny seals leaking to the air. If you suffer from an allergy or asthma, we would recommend getting the Animal 2, Small Ball, or Cinetic Big Ball.

Weight is something to think of before getting a vacuum. If you are going to carry it around, you will notice the difference.

One of the most important differences however is the weight. The Dyson Multi-Floor 2 is the lightest of all three both overall at the handle. And it really does seem to be noticeable at least in part this is because it has a smaller dut bin. So that's what you're sacrificing for the lighter weight. And it does play a role in the final analysis but let's first talk about the main negative stuff.

Besides the fact that Dyson uprights are extremely expensive compared to most vacuum brands.

Noice. The Origin was slightly quieter but they were all pretty close to the same. And they were also about average for upright vacuums.

The size of the bin volume is not something you will think of when considering getting one. All of them except for the smallest Dyson Small Ball have a big bin and you will not notice the difference between them because they all hold a big amount of dust. The Small Ball has the smallest bin and you might notice the difference in terms of emptying it more often. Not too small but if you need one with a big bin, stay away from the Small Ball.

Cord length is not a thing you pay attention to before buying a vacuum but 4 ft (121 cm) of extra length makes a difference and saves you time if you cover a big cleaning area. But it also not something that should stop you from buying a vacuum, it is not a deal-breaker.

Dimensions: the Dyson Small Ball is ideal for those who don't want to carry a big heavy vacuum around. If you do not concern about portability, the Dyson Ball Multifloor would be a good choice.

Cyclone technology is slightly different. The Dyson Cinetic does not have any filters to clean or replace. Other models require you to keep the filter clean. They provide strong suction as long as you take care of the filter. If you see that it loses suction, that might be because the filter gets clogged and need to be washed. The Cinetic does not have this issue. It does have a lifetime post-motor filter that is non-washable but it does not have a pre-filter which is the one people wash.

The Dyson Cinetic Big Ball is the most expensive but also has the biggest accessory kit. All of them come with a stair tool and a combination tool. The Dyson Ball Animal 2 also has a tangle-free turbine tool is a smaller version of the main cleaning head and is ideal to use on the places the other handheld tools can't reach. With the Dyson Ball Multifloor 2 and Dyson Small Ball, you just get a combination tool and stair tool. The Cinetic also includes a mattress tool, carbon fiber soft dusting brush, reach under tool, multi-angle tool, and in addition, it all comes in a Dyson tool bag.

If you not going to use most of the attachments that might come with the Cinetic version, you can get a different vacuum and buy some tools separately.

Nevertheless, the manufacturer says the three have about the same power, in reality, there is a difference in suction numbers.

Power Ball Origin Multi Floor 2 Ball Animal 2
Suction hose 96 114 114
Unsealed suction, kPa 0,47 0,88 1,09
Airflow head, CFM 60 59 77
Airflow hose, CFM 81 80 88

All of these floor heads have one of Dyson's most interesting rack innovations, their active base plate. Which automatically adjusts to the type of floor and the size of the garbage. To maintain a very tight seal on the floor, providing best-in-class suction capacity at the top of the floor. As we will see later, they are all HEPA filter vacuums for the whole machine, which is a premium feature.

They all have the same two-button control system. One power button and one button to turn the brush roller on and off.

Now moving on to their differences, and starting with their power, and their suction in the hose was measured, as well as what is called unsealed or usable suction on the vacuum cleaner head, as well as the airflow in the hose and in the cleaner head, and that's it. four indicators show Dyson Ball Animal 2 was the most powerful, followed by Multi Floor 2 and Dyson Origin in third place.

But it should be noted that all three of these numbers are off the charts when compared to other vacuum cleaners. For example, these absorption values for Animal 2 and Multi Floor 2 are two of the highest numbers. All that power is made the most use of when it's combined with the superior agitation of these Dysons.

In short: what is the difference between the Dyson vacuum cleaners

There are two modifications of the Dyson Ball Animal: Ball Animal 2 & Ball Animal Total Clean.

The Dyson Ball Animal Total Clean has more accessories in the box such as tool bag, Articulating hard floor tool for cleaning hard floor, Multi-angle brush makes it easy to reach high-up areas, Mattress tool, Carbon fiber soft dusting brush filaments prevent static and helps to pick up fine dust, Reach under tool extends, bends and twists to remove dust and allergens from awkward spaces.

This model has the strongest suction which makes it best for tough cleaning tasks. It has a relatively big bin but it is also heavy so not very maneuverable.

The filtration is not HEPA so if you suffer from allergy, this vacuum would not be the best choice for you.

Dyson Ball Animal 2 - for big dirty jobs and tough tasks since it has the strongest suction power. It also includes a Tangle-Free Turbine Tool.

The Dyson Ball Multifloor 2 has the smallest bin volume among others and is almost the most lightweight. The best advantage about this model is HEPA filtration as others do not have such.

This is also the second powerful cleaner (after the Dyson Ball Animal 2) so is ideal for carpets and jobs when extra power is needed.

It is also the cheapest in the series. But it lacks a Tangle-Free Turbine Tool which is ideal for small surfaces as it is tangle-free and is suitable for pet hair cleaning.

The cleaner has a combination and stair tools in the box.

Has a HEPA filter and is safe for allergy-sufferers

Dyson Ball Multifloor 2 - a little bit more maneuverable than the Ball Animal 2 and Cinetic Big Ball. It is lightweight and more portable.

The Dyson Cynetic Big Ball has the biggest accessory pack and this is the reason of such a high price.

This is also the only model that does not require any filter to wash or replace but would not be safe for dust-sensitive people. Because of having no filter, the vacuum never loses suction as it doesn't get clogged.

This model has the biggest bin size and is the heaviest among the others.

Dyson Cynetic Big Ball is one of the cleaners that does not require washing a filter. It has no pre-filter which has to be cleaned so if you want a vacuum with no needs to clean a filter - get the Dyson Cynetic Big Ball. Also, it has the most attachments in the box.

A Combination Tool and Stair Tool are the most important attachments you might want to use so if you don't want to spend more on the Cynetic Big Ball vacuum, you can get any of these and buy an extra accessory separately.

The Dyson Ball Origin has the biggest dustbin and has lots of power.

This is the vacuum for those who want lots of power and HEPA filtration.

Deep clean test Multifloor 2

Agitation is how much the brush roll beats the carpet which causes the fine particles and carpet to sort of jump out which the vacuum then sucks up. All three of these easily scored 100% on the carpet deep clean test.

This agitation when combined with all that suction and that active base plate earlier makes these Dyson some of the very best vacuums on the market for keeping carpets as clean as they possibly can be which is not as common as you might think with debris pick up on the surfaces of hard floors and carpet.

They all performed about the same on both hard floors and carpet.

If you encounter debris too big for it to pick up let's talk about this hose design because besides carpet cleaning this is one of the big selling points for Dyson uprights.

To sum up

The main negative thing is they're not made for every type of carpet.  This means that the brush roll would stop it would bog down on either very long carpet. But it also bogged down on really dense rugs like this one in my house where the fibers are just tightly packed together.

Dyson puts their designs through a crazy amount of testing and they do seem to last a long time from everything. That I can tell their customer satisfaction scores are really high online.

But which one is the best and has to give that to the Multi Floor 2 it may be slightly less powerful than the Animal 2. And you get a pretty significant reduction in weight and therefore added maneuverability but the cost is also significantly lower than the Animal 2

If you really wanted that extra turbine tool you could buy one separately and maybe the Animal 2 is a great choice too. The only one a hard time justifying is the Origin which isn't that much cheaper than the Multi Floor 2 but it's noticeably less powerful and it's the same weight and size as the Animal. And the only advantage of the Origin is that is has a longer cord than the others.
